SHAW & ROYTON NEWS

SHAW COUNCIL CHRISTMAS MARKET 2025

The Council promised an amazing spectacular on Sunday 23rd November.

While the rain played a factor in the low attendance, the costs incurred did not justify what was there.

The Council spent in excess of £10,000 putting on the Christmas Show. With a Ferris wheel, flying chairs, a Christmas Organ and a Helter Skelter everyone was looking forward to it.

Stallholders complained about the loud noise of the organ, the Ferris wheel cutting off half the market, the leaves on the car park causing people to slip, the ride owners constantly tightening bolts on the Ferris wheel did not fill us with confidence, traders were packing up at 1pm. The costs were way too much for Christmas Market which was produced. Will be interesting to see the profits etc.

SHAW AND CROMPTON CHRISTMAS LIGHTS SWITCH ON

What a fantastic day it was!

Shaw and Crompton Events Group (volunteers) put on the best light switch on Shaw has had.

There was a marquee with stalls, tombola and games. Something for everyone.

The stage was halfway up Market Street, and was hosted by Jackie Dijon, and singers included Duffy Twins, Johnny Harper and Two Connors.

The light switch on itself was performed by Shaw's own Scott Woodhead.

Elves danced on the street, live reindeer were at the quieter end of the street, The Grinch ran around, Snowman made an appearance, and Santa sat in his sleigh giving out gifts.

'BEAL VALLEY / BROADBENT MOSS MASTERPLAN

COMES BEFORE PLANNING ON WEDS 17TH DEC 6PM

The Labour led administration of OMBC is proposing to build 1,600 houses on the Beal Valley & Broadbent Moss sites, as part of Andy Burnhams 'Places For Everyone' spatial plan.

The land was part of Oldham's greenbelt until 2024.

A new Metrolink stop has been announced for Cop Road, paving the way for 1,450 homes slated for Broadbent Moss between Shaw town centre and Derker. Incidentally, the announcement neglects to mention the 500 homes in Beal Valley, 450 houses at Cowlishaw and the 400 planned for Linney lane. That is almost 3,000 homes in the narrow stretch of land between Shaw town centre and Derker.

Please go to Save Shaw's Greenbelt or Save Oldham's Greenbelt pages

on Facebook for more important information

Ecological appraisals necessary to inform the Master Planning have not been carried out.

THIS IS NEEDLESS DESTRUCTION OF LOCAL WILDLIFE

CHRISTMAS FAIRS AND MARKETS

MEMORIAL PLINTH ROYTON

A memorial plaque has gone up in Royton to commemorate the hundreds of babies buried in unmarked graves in the borough.

The plinth was installed in Royton Cemetery – exactly a year after a mass grave containing the bodies of 145 stillborn children, 128 babies and young kids and 29 adults was discovered there.

The discovery shook the local community, exposing the historic practice of removing stillborn babies from their parents and burying them in communal graves without their knowledge or consent.

The memorial plinth, made of rust-effect metal, has been placed next to a bench overlooking the largest unmarked grave in the cemetery.

An inscription reads: “A quiet Place. This memorial bench is by the side of one of the unmarked graves.

"It is a place of quiet and reflection, to remember those laid to rest here.

OMBC COUNCIL MEETING

OMBC and other parts of the Chamber rejected FREE bulky item roadside pick ups to reduce fly tipping on the streets of The Borough.

£600,000 was spent on removing fly tipping last year!

The Council only makes £230,000 in revenue from this,

so this seemed the logical solution but was NOT approved
